5 Characteristics to Create Your Contemporary-Style Space

April 4, 2014 By Stephanie

If the contemporary style were to be defined in one word, that word would be simplicity. When it comes to creating a contemporary style today, less is more, and that means that each piece should make an impact and have a strong appearance in your space. To design your home, be sure to include these five characteristics:

1. Simple geometric forms

Furniture with ornate detailing is common in traditional homes, but these pieces would look out of place in a contemporary setting. Stick with simple, geometric forms and avoid furniture with frills and adornment. The clean and smooth lines featured in contemporary furniture will give your room a sharp appearance.

2. Open spaces

A contemporary space should never feel cluttered or crowded. When decorating a room, lay out furniture and décor carefully so the space feels open and airy. Of course, be careful of designing the room to be too open, which will make the space feel unfinished. It’s all about balance!

3. Minimal accessories

Just like you shouldn’t crowd your space with furniture, you also should not crowd it with accessories. Remember, simplicity is key to designing a contemporary decorating style room. Instead of covering every surface and inch of wall space with accessories like you might in the eclectic style, choose a few stand-out pieces to make a more focused statement.

4. Neutral colors

People have the tendency to think that neutral colors are boring, but they can actually create a cozier space in the contemporary style. Decorate the room with warmer neutral tones like tans and creams, and use darker colors like blacks and greys as your secondary colors. If you feel the space needs to pop, incorporate a bright color with wall art or a piece of furniture.

5. Glossy finishes

In the contemporary style, everything shines. When browsing for furniture and or even smaller parts like door handles, be sure to look for glossy finishes or materials. Materials like chrome and steel are often found in contemporary homes. If you’re looking at wood furniture, be sure the wood is polished or coated in lacquer.

Contemporary spaces can be both hip and cozy with the right furniture and décor. When designing your space, keep these five characteristics in mind to create a contemporary home that you’ll love.
