5 Reasons Why Futons are Not Just for College Dorms

June 27, 2014 By Stephanie

Futons are making a comeback in interior design – and not just for college dorm rooms. Many homeowners and renters are once again becoming aware of the benefits of owning a futon and deciding to furnish their space with one in place of a bed or a sofa. Depending on your needs, a futon may be the perfect addition to your home.

Those who haven’t enjoyed the benefits of a futon tend to have some misconceptions about them. You might think futons are uncomfortable, unattractive or that they break easily. While there certainly are some cheap futons out there with these qualities, a well-constructed and well-designed futon can bring style, comfort and convenience to a room. Here are just five advantages you can enjoy by having a futon:

1. Versatility

Futons can be used either as a sofa or a bed, and this versatility makes them useful in the living room or bedroom. If you don’t have a guest room, turn your living room couch into a bed for company to sleep on during their stay. A futon in your room can function mostly as a bed, but kit can also transform into an extra sofa if needed.

2. Saves money

Futons are two pieces of furniture in one, and they are usually less expensive than a regular bed set. With a futon, you can enjoy quality comfort and style even on a tight budget.

3. Saves space

If you have limited space in your home, a futon is often the best solution for furnishing a room without making it feel cramped. This is especially true in the bedroom, as a futon is typically much smaller than a queen or king-sized bed frame.

4. Easy to move

Futons are easy to fold up and move, whereas a sofa or bed is not. If you rent your space and move quite frequently, or if you simply like to move furniture around to freshen up a room’s look, a futon will be very a convenient piece for you.

5. They provide comfort

Like I said before, futons can be very comfortable as long as you choose one of high quality. Options like triple-foam mattresses will make you forget you’re sitting on a futon altogether!

Are you looking for an affordable sofa or bed that is convenient, comfortable and saves space? A futon might be the perfect solution!

I remember when every kid wanted to have the futon bunk bed. I thought anyone who had one was really cool, and I was always quite jealous. I think the bed/desk combos became popular after the futons, and I really wanted one of those, too. It is still popular these days to find furniture that serves multiple purposes and saves space. The futon is coming back for the very reasons that you listed here.
