The Beginner’s Guide to Changing Your Home Decor

May 20, 2015 By Jennifer

We all need a change from time to time to keep from feeling bored or stuck in a rut. The same can be said for your interior design. If your home decor is starting to lose its appeal, shake things up with new accessories. Here’s a simple guide to help get you started.

Start with small changes

Changing your decor can feel overwhelming at first, so start with a few simple adjustments to make the decorating process feel a little more manageable. For example, you can swap out basic accessories like throw pillows or curtains for new styles.

Pick a color scheme

Deciding on a color scheme right away will help you make decisions more quickly when shopping for new decor. It will also prevent you from purchasing items that don’t go well together. Pick a color scheme before even looking at decor. Or, find one accessory that you really love and let it help you choose colors for your space.

Find one or two statement pieces to inspire the rest of your decisions

Rather than choosing an assortment of miscellaneous accessories, search for a few statement decor items that will have a big impact on your space’s style. Decorating the area with a few eye-catching pieces will give your room a bit of punch and pizzazz. Then you can complement your attention-grabbing decor with more subtle items to complete the look.

Have an overall style in mind

If you wish to give your home a specific style, such as modern or traditional, learn what characteristics make up that style to get the look right. Keep that information in mind every time you search for new decor to make sure each accessory matches the style you’re trying to create.

Take your time and choose only pieces you love

When redecorating your home, it’s tempting to just buy all new decor in one weekend and call it good. This, however, can lead to regret and you might find yourself redecorating again sooner than later. Take your time and be sure that you don’t just like, but love, each new piece you’re bringing into your home.
