How to Bring HGTV’s Fixer Upper Design to Your Home

HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper follows Joanna Gaines as she uses her impeccable eye for design to give aging, run-down homes a new chance to be beautiful and trendy. With rustic yet modern style and a knack for repurposing items, Joanna manages to create one beautiful, “farmhouse chic” design after another. To bring Joanna’s style to your home, follow these five easy tips and give your home the Fixer Upper treatment.

1. Keep it simple

Joanna Gaines is all about simplicity and open spaces, and in order to channel her Fixer Upper look, it’s time to go through your home and clean out the clutter. Ask yourself if you really need every piece of wall art or all the knickknacks taking up space on your mantelpiece. If the answer is no, then sell, donate or throw away the items to increase the room’s open space. Once the clutter is gone, you’ll feel cleaner and happier in your home.

2. Bring the outdoors inside

Whether it’s flowers plucked from the garden, succulents or an indoor herb garden, including natural elements in your home décor will add warmth and a peaceful feel to your home. For some inspiration on how to add some green to your home, check out 5 DIY Indoor Garden ideas for Your Home.

3. Focus on neutral colors

In almost all of Joanna’s designs, she uses neutral colors. Neutrals like white, gray, black, brown and beige open up and brighten a room to create a comfy and cozy atmosphere. With neutrals as the main colors in a space, you can easily add a pop of color without it becoming overwhelming. A few small and simple pieces like colorful pillows or bright flowers offer a great way to incorporate color while maintaining a soft, modern overall look with neutral colors.

4. Let the light in

Natural light provides a spacious, comforting feel, which is why Joanna’s Fixer Upper projects often emphasize an abundance of natural light. Remove curtains and blinds to let the beautiful, natural light shine in and give your home a whole new look. In areas where natural light isn’t available, add light fixtures to make up for it. Be creative with the light fixtures, though. Consider using lanterns or an elegant chandelier to make the lighting more interesting.

5. Don’t skimp on the details

Even though Joanna stresses simplicity, small details can really bring a room together and create a unique look. Pieces with intricate details like a framed vanity mirror or coffee table with a stylish finish will add charm without overpowering the room.

Now it’s time to take these tips and transform your home into one of Joanna Gaines’s masterpieces on HGTV’s Fixer Upper. Even the smallest changes can give your home décor the refreshed, stylish look you’ve been waiting for.
