Save Your Futon with a Mattress Upgrade

February 25, 2019 By Jennifer

When you were in college or renting your first apartment, a futon was probably your furniture of choice. Versatile and affordable, futons are a great alternative to a bed or sofa for people on a budget or those with limited space. Once you have a bigger budget and a larger living space, however, one of the first actions you’ll take is to say goodbye to your worn-out furniture and hello to new, higher-quality items.

Don’t throw out your futon yet, though. Chances are the frame is still in great condition, but the mattress is showing wear and tear. Instead of getting rid of the entire futon, replace the mattress and transform your futon into a comfortable, stylish part of your new furniture collection. When buying a new futon mattress, the two most important qualities to consider are its thickness and material.

Thickness

Basic futons often come with thin, lumpy mattresses that don’t offer much comfort or support. When you’re on a tight budget, this type of mattress might be suitable. But now that you’re ready for an upgrade, you can find a thicker futon mattress that will give you the comfort and support you deserve.

Futon mattresses between five and six inches thick are the best choice for a mattress upgrade. These mattresses offer additional cushioning without going overboard. They’re also less expensive than the extra-thick varieties. If extra-thick is more your style, however, search for a futon mattress between eight and 10 inches. They will have even more cushion and be of higher quality in order to provide the utmost comfort and support.

Material

In addition to providing extra comfort and support, thicker mattresses also offer a wider variety of materials. Many basic futon mattresses are made entirely of cotton, like the one your futon probably came with. However, you’ll have many more materials to choose from now that you’re on the hunt for a thicker mattress. With high-quality futon mattresses, you’ll find multi-layer foam with a cotton-poly blend, eggcrate with high-density foam, polyester and many other material combinations. In fact, you’ll even discover that some futon mattress feature the same offerings as regular mattresses, like innersprings, Memory Foam and coil technology.

If it’s time to upgrade your futon mattress, be sure to do your research on the different thickness levels and materials available so you can pick the best fit for your needs. Check out the futon mattresses from DCG Stores to get started.
